Recommending valuable ideas in an open innovation community

Abstract: Purpose Open innovation communities are a growing trend across diverse industries because they provide opportunities of collaborating with customers and exploiting their knowledge effectively. Although open innovation communities can be strategic assets that can help firms innovate, firms nonetheless face the challenge of information overload incurred due to the characteristic of the community. The purpose of this paper is to mitigate the problem of information overload in an open innovation environment. Des… Show more

“…(2017)’s findings, which were made using data from a firm-internal online idea competition and Mendeley crowdsourcing community, respectively. In contrast, Lee et al . (2018b) suggested that idea length negatively impacts idea quality in Starbucks’s MyStarbucksIdea community; Bayus (2013) concluded that once an ideator’s idea has been implemented, he/she is unlikely to propose another adoptable idea in Dell’s IdeaStorm community.…”

“…Automated analysis tools can be installed to dynamically monitor and analyze these indicators. Constrained by manpower and time, this method could vastly reduce the workload and management burden involved in idea screening, effectively solving information overload problems (Lee et al ., 2018a) so that managers can focus more on innovation tasks and improve their decision-making efficiency.…”

“…Previous studies on promoting factors of OVCA (Appendix ) in online communities can help us manage online communities and improve the value co‐creation process, but most studies ignore the different roles of OVCA in different management domain. Existing studies usually treat OVCA as an integrated behavior (e.g., social media usage or value co‐creation behavior) (Wong et al., 2016) or choose one specific activity (e.g., product design) (Lee et al., 2018) as the substitute of OVCA, whereas the OVCA has different manifestations in multiple management field.…”

“…It is based on a reductionist view of internal innovation processes at a time when the external, commercial environment is increasingly characterized as, not only inherently risky, but also volatile, uncertain, complex, and ambiguous [ 27 ]. It is also more likely that increasingly open, uncontrolled, and layered connections are common among individuals, teams, organizations, and networks [ 28 , 29 , 30 , 31 , 32 ].…”
