The conditions included in the definition of metabolic syndrome typically include central obesity (excessive fat accumulation around the waist), insulin resistance, hyperglycemia (elevated blood sugar levels), dyslipidemia (abnormal levels of lipids in the blood), and hypertension (high blood pressure). Having any three or more of these conditions is considered to be indicative of metabolic syndrome. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is emerging as a major public health problem with pro-inflammatory changes leading to Insulin Resistance and Cardiovascular Disease (CVD) at a very young age. Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is a global health concern; metabolic syndrome is becoming more common in our country. It is found to be a risk factor for insulin resistance and abnormal adipose tissue . Clinical symptoms of the syndrome could include abdominal obesity, hypertension, diabetes, hypertriglyceridemia, and low HDL cholesterol. So far various studies have been conducted on the effect of inflammatory markers like Serum Uric acid (UA), serum homocysteine, Leptin, Lp(a) etc. Most of them have reported a positive correlation between these inflammatory markers and the various components of (MetS) like abdominal obesity, elevated Blood pressure, Fasting blood Glucose and Lipid profile abnormalities like elevated Triglycerides (TAG) and low High Density Lipoprotein-Cholesterol (HDL-C). Various studies have reported a positive correlation between serum uric acid and Serum Homocysteine and Lp(a) in causing endothelial dysfunction and premature Cardiovascular events. Hence a review of the studies pertaining to the various inflammatory markers was done. There was an association of various inflammatory markers like uric acid, homocysteine, MDA, lipoprotein and others. More awareness must be created even at the high school level regarding the ill effects of sedentary lifestyle the likely hood of metabolic syndrome. An early identification of surging biomarker levels in high-risk children may find new cases at an earlier stage to prevent upcoming diabetes mellitus and its complications.

Bioactive compounds and antioxidant activity in three types of Korean watery kimchi

Watery kimchi is a traditional fermented food served with its soup. In this study, we collected 21 samples of yeolmu mul kimchi (YMK), dongchimi (DC), and nabak kimchi (NK), respectively, which are the most popular watery kimchi in Korea. A composite sample of each watery kimchi was prepared for estimation of their bioactive compounds and antioxidant activities. Of the three kimchi types, YMK had the highest total carotenoid content (63.78 ± 4.88 mg/100 g, of which lutein, capsanthin, and β-carotene were the main carotenoids), and DC had the lowest (3.50 ± 0.12 mg/100 g). YMK also had the highest contents of chlorophyll (250.1 ± 3.91 mg/100 g), ascorbic acid (447.16 ± 8.95 mg/100 g), and capsaicinoids (2.51 ± 0.09 mg/100 g) compared to DC and NK. The lactic acid content was highest in NK (582.72 ± 29.10 mg/100 g). Moreover, YMK showed significantly higher antioxidant activity (ABTS and DPPH) than DC and NK (p < 0.05). Chlorophyll and antioxidant activity showed a strong positive correlation (p < 0.01). The results of this study highlighted watery kimchi as a potentially valuable source of bioactive compounds, and the carotenoids and capsaicinoids were affected by the supporting ingredients used in watery kimchi. Furthermore, watery kimchi provides 4.11% of the recommended daily intake of vitamin A according to the 2020 Korean dietary reference intakes.

Dynamics of Serum Retinol and Alpha-Tocopherol Levels According to Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease Status

The available data on the association between micronutrients in the blood and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) are limited. To investigate the clinical implications of this relationship, we sought to identify the difference in the serum levels of vitamins A and E according to NAFLD status using data from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In this cross-sectional study of the Korean population, NAFLD and its severity were defined using prediction models. Differences in the prevalence and severity of NAFLD were analyzed according to serum retinol (vitamin A) and alpha (α)-tocopherol (vitamin E) levels. Serum levels of retinol and α-tocopherol were positively correlated with the prevalence of NAFLD. In most prediction models of the NAFLD subjects, serum retinol deficiency was significantly correlated with advanced fibrosis, while serum α-tocopherol levels did not differ between individuals with or without advanced fibrosis. Similar trends were also noted with cholesterol-adjusted levels of α-tocopherol. In summary, while circulating concentrations of retinol and α-tocopherol were positively associated with the presence of NAFLD, advanced liver fibrosis was only correlated with serum retinol levels. Our findings could provide insight into NAFLD patient care at a micronutrient level.
