Recommended Best Practices based on MBSE Pilot Projects

Abstract: Model‐Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) is an emerging paradigm for improving the efficiency and effectiveness of systems engineering through the pervasive use of integrated descriptive representations of the system to capture knowledge about the system for the benefit of all stakeholders. This paper describes some of the key engineering lessons and recommended best practices that have emerged from several MBSE pilot projects over the past few years.

“…This will be a constant struggle between the tensions of short-term and long-term needs in which the architect has to make a large number of bets with limited information. (Noguchi 2019) Adding complexity to the model to reduce the likelihood for expensive architectural refactoring may add quite a lot of additional work in the present, increasing the deterministic cost of the development effort in exchange for a desirable reduction in the stochastic cost that will manifest in the future. This can be a difficult "sell" for the model architect facing schedule pressure to produce models and having barely enough resources to do so.…”

“…Many lessons learned have been observed in early pilot efforts to prototype and demonstrate the value of MBSE via hands-on exploration, and best practices have emerged from these exploratory efforts and from subsequent activities to deploy MBSE on a more "production" basis. (Noguchi 2019).…”

“…The creation, development, and sustainment of a shared systems model are the primary goals of any MBSE methodology. An enabler of greater efficiency and effectiveness within the systems engineering discipline, the shared systems model allows details of a system to be captured and made available in a variety of views for the benefit of all concerned stakeholders (Noguchi 2016). To support the model-based simulation of the lunar habitat system, a detailed shared system architecture was developed in SysML using the CATIA Magic/Cameo MagicDraw software application published by Dassault Systèmes (Dassault Systèmes 2021).…”

“…The MBSE‐based development process is described as repeated iterations of evolution and refinement of the system's models. Successful deployment of MBSE in SE and best‐practices 17 were demonstrated and even its return‐on‐investment was determined 18 …”
