Recommendations on stent manufacture, implantation and utilization

Abstract: A new method based on SEM for estimating size of the stent during implantation in the artery was introduced. The proposed approach benefits the fact that the imaginary parts of the natural poles are correlated with the dimensions of the stent structure throughout expansion. The results of simulation of a stent at six stages of expansion demonstrated that the poles are moving in the complex plane as the stent expands. The moving poles create a pole map to identify size of the stent in the artery. The validity o… Show more

“…The clinical application of endovascular stents for the treatment of obstructive coronary artery disease is generally accepted as an established treatment option [4]. In particular, elective Palmaz-Schatz stent placement in discrete (Ͻ15 mm lesion length), new-onset lesions in large (Ͼ3 mm) native coronary arteries is characterized by lower restenosis rates and a lesser need for target site revascularization at 6 months than after conventional angioplasty [4].…”

“…With a view toward the upcoming compulsory application of the Medical Devices Directives of the European Community (E.C.) in June 1998 [4], they set up guidelines. For one, to be marketed in Europe, each stent must bear the E.C.…”

“…As a consequence, we expect a decrease in the number of available stents. The working group said, however, that it was hoping that European investigators ''will not be plagued with the administrative restrictions that have affected the research and clinical endeavors of our U.S. colleagues'' [4].…”
