Recommendations on Quality Control and Quality Assurance in Cervical Cytology

Abstract: Objective: We aimed to critically evaluate the importance of quality control (QC) and quality assurance (QA) strategies in the routine work of uterine cervix cytology. Study Design: We revised all the main principles of QC and QA that are already being implemented worldwide and then discussed the positive aspects and limitations of these as well as proposing alternatives when pertinent. Results: A literature review was introduced after highlighting the main historical revisions, and then a critical evaluation … Show more

“…Procurement of adequate diagnostic cytological material by FNAC is also another major concern in the pre-analytical phase of quality management. It has been reported that sample adequacy is a hallmark of quality in cytology [9]. It not only requires the technical skill of the aspirator, but also ROSE to check the adequacy of the material aspirated instantaneously.…”

“…Similarly, in the histopathology lab, pre-analytical errors are also remarkable [7]. However, pre-analytical error detection and quality assurance in the cytopathology lab has not been studied widely and the published literature is usually related to quality control and quality assurance in cervicovaginal cytology [8, 9]. In addition to this, cost effectiveness also plays an important role in maintaining high quality standards, especially in resource-limited settings.…”

“…Nevertheless, we believe that the R10 model is the only affordable option for such large-scale projects in low-resource settings. The overall quality of cervical cytology is affected by several factors in preanalytical and postanalytical steps, including: (1) biological variability; (2) collection of samples (site and sampling method); (3) laboratory procedure, including processing; (4) primary screening (manual or computer assisted); and (5) interpretation [24,25] . It should be noted that our project involved only the primary screening phase, which is just a part of the overall quality assurance process.…”
