The conductance catheter technique enables continuous ventricular volume measurements based on the electrical conductance of blood within the ventricular cavity. However, ventricular excitation also produces a measurable electrical signal within the ventricular cavity. This study was undertaken to investigate the relationship between the ventricular electrogram and conductance volume measurements in a physical model of the left ventricle without parallel conductance. The ventricular electrogram was simulated with an ECG signal, ECG input connected to two ring electrodes within the model ventricle. Conductance volume measurements were made with and without ECG input . The difference between these measurements, G ECG (t), represented the conductance volume due to ECG input . G ECG (t) varied as a function of the first-derivative of ECG input with respect to time (r 2 =0.92, P<0.001). G ECG (t), This primarily affected volume measurements during ventricular depolarisation; during this phase the volume measurement error varied widely between -12% and +9%. As a result, end-diastole could not be reliably identified on the pressure-volume loop. The accuracy of conductance volume measurements during late diastole and early isovolumic contraction are substantially affected by the ventricular electrogram. This may result in a significant error in end-diastolic volume estimates, which has important implications for the quantitative assessment of ventricular function including, in particular, the assessment of chamber compliance.

Summary: To evaluate the combined effects of alcohol and nitroglycerin on cardiovascular hemodynamics, Mmode echocardiography and sphygmomanometric blood pressure measurements were perfonned on two groups of nonnal subjects, before and after the administration of nitroglycerin, both in the sober state and during alcohol intoxication. In the first part of the study, 0.5 mg of nitroglycerin was given sublingually to 10 healthy volunteers 5-10 minutes after they had ingested I g/kg body weight of ethanol within a 30-minute period. Summary: The severity and site of hypertrophy is important in determining the clinical picture and the natural history of hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM). We evaluated left ventricular hypertrophy by means of twodimensional echocardiographic score and score index, and correlated these findings with symptoms, electrovectorcardiographic data, and ventricular arrhythmias. A total of 42 patients with HCM were studied by clinical examination, ECG, VCG, M-mode and 2D echocardiography, and 24-h Holter monitoring. The extent and severity of the hypertrophic process were calculated by a score system. The left ventricle was divided into 11 segments and a hypertrophic score (HS) was given to each segment. A hypertrophy score index (HSI) was also calculated by dividing the number of hypertrophied segments by 13. No correlation was found between symptoms and HS and HSI, nor ECG-VCG abnormalities and HS and HSI.
