“…This proposal ignores and potentially alienates those who will receive doctorates in (a) School Counseling and (b) Counselor Education. Both groups have readily achieved appropriate employment historically, and clearly there is increasing, dire need for the latter (Hosie, 1990;Maples, 1989). We propose that the title counselor education is appropriate for academic departments, but that as many as four (or possibly five) separate doctoral degrees be offered within those departments: (a) School Counseling, (b) Student Affairs Practice, (c) Counselor Education, (d) Community Agency (Mental Health) Counseling, and possibly (given current trends in the profession) (e) Marriage and Family Counseling.…”
