Recommendation system for automatic design of magazine covers

Abstract: In this paper, we present a recommendation system for the automatic design of magazine covers. Our users are nondesigner designers: individuals or small and medium businesses who want to design without hiring a professional designer while still wanting to create aesthetically compelling designs. Because a design should have a purpose, we suggest a number of semantic features to the user, e.g., "clean and clear," "dynamic and active," or "formal," to describe the color mood for the purpose of his/her design. “…In image retrieval, Solli and Lenz [150] defined a mathematical framework for Kobayashi's Color Image Scale. This framework is utilized by [138,151] in designing alternative and customized magazine covers for non-designers based on color moods. For color mood transfer of images, Murray et al [152] applied the 15 moods suggested by Csurka et al [147].…”

“…Similarly, translating the associations inferred from the magazine covers to other kinds of media such as website remains for future work. Because LDA-dual is a generative model, it can be used in automatic creation of designs based on the user's preferences, similar to magazine cover design [151], and website design [116].…”

“…In our prior work, we have applied Kobayashi's color semantics for a recommendation system in automatic design of magazine covers, by utilizing Solli and Lens's framework (see [17,30]). While in many cases this framework performs well in associating color semantics with images, it does not effectively match some images with the color combinations, which in turn, results in an ineffective association between these images and color semantics.…”

“…While metadesign allows users to contribute their own visions and objectives to a system, it also adds additional work for a user who may not have design experience. Automatically generating designs is one way to overcome a user's inexperience and incorporate expert knowledge (e.g., generating magazine covers [8], web designs [11], and user interfaces [3]). Additionally, allowing users to communicate their design goals through examples is helpful for users to express their design Permission to make digital or hard copies of all or part of this work for personal or classroom use is granted without fee provided that copies are not made or distributed for profit or commercial advantage and that copies bear this notice and the full citation on the first page.…”
