Recombinant truncated TGF‑β receptor II attenuates carbon tetrachloride‑induced epithelial‑mesenchymal transition and liver fibrosis in rats

Abstract: Liver fibrosis is a pathological process of chronic liver diseases. In particular, epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT) is a major source of myofibroblast structure in liver fibrosis. The present study investigated the effects of recombinant truncated transforming growth factor‑ß receptor II (rtTGFβRII) on EMT and liver fibrosis in a carbon tetrachloride (CCl4)‑induced rat model. A total of 24 rats were randomly separated into three groups: Normal control (NC), model (CCl4) and treatment (CCl4 + rtTGFβRII) … Show more

“…Hepatic fibrosis is characterized by the aberrant production and deposition of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins, which leads to hepatic parenchyma and liver structure damage (7). Epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) has been described as a principal mechanism for the deposition of ECM in liver, renal and pulmonary fibrosis injury models (8,9). Furthermore, adult hepatocytes serve a key role in the process of hepatic fibrogenesis via EMT (10,11).…”

“…Mean amount of liver connective tissue in healthy male Sprague-Dawley rats. Graphs (mean ± two standard errors) of the amount of liver connective tissue quantified on histological sections stained with Masson's trichrome[13,14,19,26,29,30,33,38,54,[56][57][58]63] (a) or picrosirius red[4,13,21,25,27,32,34,36,39,[42][43][44][48][49][50]52,55,58,60,62,64] (b) revealed significant differences. Multiple graphs within one study represents multiple rat groups within the study.…”
