RecombinantSaccharomyces Cerevisiaeas New Drug Delivery System to Gut: In Vitro Validation and Oral Formulation

Abstract

The development of recombinant deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) technology has allowed the emergence of novel applications such as drug production directly in the human digestive environment (“in situ”) by ingested living recombinant microorganisms. Genetically engineered microorganisms offer several advantages over classical dosage forms, such as protection of active compounds and regulation of gene expression. This article focuses on the concept and applications of biodrug, scientific feasibility of biodrug concept using yeast as vector, and oral formulation of recombinant yeasts.
