Recombinant Cytokines from Plants

Abstract: Plant-based platforms have been successfully applied for the last two decades for the efficient production of pharmaceutical proteins. The number of commercialized products biomanufactured in plants is, however, rather discouraging. Cytokines are small glycosylated polypeptides used in the treatment of cancer, immune disorders and various other related diseases. Because the clinical use of cytokines is limited by high production costs they are good candidates for plant-made pharmaceuticals. Several research gr… Show more

“…The wide implementation of novel methods depends on the economic benefits and public opinion. So far, plants have been modified to produce vaccines, hormones, enzymes and antibodies (Shaaltiel et al 2007;Rabindran et al 2009;López et al 2010;Sirko et al 2011;Ma and Wang 2012;Madanala et al 2015).…”

“…Transgenic plants are currently emerging as bio-factories having significant prospective in the production of complex human therapeutic proteins [29][30][31][32][33] Protein therapeutics from animal or human sources are conventionally produced by microbial or mammalian bioreactor systems for commercial purposes. [34][35][36][37] Targeting recombinant protein through the plant secretion pathway 38 can accumulate dissolved proteins in aqueous phase of the extracellular space, called the apoplast.…”

“…Cytokines are signaling proteins in intercellular communication and are involved in diverse regulation processes, such as embryogenesis, immune and hematopoietic systems [56]. Due to high production costs, pharmaceutical application of recombinant cytokines is still very limited.…”
