Recognizing friends by their walk: Gait perception without familiarity cues

Abstract: Viewers can recognize themselves and others in an abstract display of their movements_ Light sources mounted on joints prominent during the act of walking are sufficient cues for identification. No other information, no feedback, and little practice with such a display are needed_ This procedure, developed by Johansson, holds promise for inquiry into the dimensions and features of event perception: It is both naturalistic and experimentally manageable_ People often believe that they can recognize friends by th… Show more

“…Gait recognition of familiar people is possible from extremely impoverished images such as dynamic point-light displays (Cutting & Kozlowski, 1977) and it is possible to learn and identify idiosyncratic stride patterns of previously-unfamiliar people from this type of display (Stevenage, Nixon & Vince, 1999). There was no attempt to disguise gait when the actor reentered the room for the live showup trial and it is possible that decisions were partly made on this basis.…”

“…The possibility of recognizing people by the way they move might therefore obtain. Pioneering evidence has been produced by Cutting and Kozlowski (1977) who have shown, with Johansson's (1973) patch-light technique, that recognition is possible from viewing the kinematics of walking friends. Frykholm (1983aFrykholm ( , 1983b has extended these findings by using methods that permit control of naming confusion.…”

“…For reasons of symmetry, we also create a rotated template using the opposite rotation (−r). Subsequently, two new SEIs are constructed based on the rotated averaged silhouettes using equation (3). This construction is shown in Figure 7(a).…”

“…For the experimental evaluation of our method, we use the CMU database [18], the CASIA database [19] and the gait database that was recorded in the framework of the ACTIBIO project (Unobtrusive Authentication Using ACTIvity Related and Soft BIOmetrics) 3 . In the above databases, there are test gait sequences in which the walking person is carrying a bag or wearing a coat, which facilitates the demonstration of the benefits of our approach.…”
