Recognizing Degenerative Aging as a Treatable Medical Condition: Methodology and Policy

Abstract: It is becoming increasingly clear that in order to accomplish healthy longevity for the population, there is an urgent need for the research and development of effective therapies against degenerative aging processes underlying major aging-related diseases, including heart disease, neurodegenerative diseases, type 2 diabetes, cancer, pulmonary obstructive diseases, as well as aging-related complications and susceptibilities of infectious communicable diseases. Yet, an important incentive for the research and d… Show more

“…Likewise, the use of drugs in the fight against ageing has several significant limitations (Chmielewski 2019a;Rattan 2019). These theoretical problems notwithstanding, many researchers classify ageing as a disease (Bulterijs et al 2015;Gems 2015;Stambler 2015Stambler , 2017 and promote 'anti-ageing' drugs (Blagosklonny 2017, 2018), even though most of these methods seem incongruous from an evolutionary standpoint. Nevertheless, it is possible that ageing as a dynamic and plastic process can be modulated using more sophisticated methods in the future (cf.…”

“…The answer to this question is not easy, even if intuitively some would say "yes, aging is a disease and as such may be cured" (Caplan, 2005;Bulterijs et al, 2015;Zhavoronkov and Bhullar, 2015;Stambler, 2017) while others will say "not at all, aging is not a disease although it may be modulated" (Rattan, 2014). Even if this distinction seems trivial, it has many consequences for science and translational research.…”

“…It is well known that chronic non-communicable diseases have been the major contributors to the disease burden, among which age-related diseases such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer diseases have become the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide [2][3][4][5][6][7][8][9] . Moreover, these diseases could not only affect the life quality of the elderly, but also the family members who take care them 10 . So how to prevent the age-related diseases and how can people achieve the condition of healthy aging?…”
