We describe the new frog Telmatobius achachila sp. nov. from the late Middle to earliest Late Miocene of Achiri, based on a partial skeleton found at 3960 m above sealevel in the Bolivian Altiplano. This skeleton, attributed to a male adult, constitutes the first documented fossil record of the speciose living genus Telmatobius, endemic to the Andean Cordillera and the Altiplano. Phylogenetic analysis confirms the new species as being part of the crown group, and diverging both later than the T. verrucosus group and earlier than the T. bolivianus, T. marmoratus and T. macrostomus groups. Coupled with its accurate stratigraphic provenance and age, this phylogenetic position provides a relevant calibration point for timing the evolutionary history of these highland, mostly aquatic frogs. The skeleton of T. achachila indicates that several of the osteological peculiarities of extant Telmatobius were already acquired at c. 12 Ma, including some that might be linked to their aquatic lifestyle. Together with mixed montane–rainforest pollen vegetation uncovered in the same level, this fossil specimen further provides key data enabling a more accurate reconstruction of ancestral habitats and elevation ranges of Telmatobius, agreeing with the previously postulated conditions in which these water frogs might have first evolved. Ultimately, this discovery adds to the sparse evidence of a humid tropical Bolivian Altiplano just prior to: (1) the Late Miocene uplift pulse of the Central Altiplano; and (2) the drastic climate deterioration that occurred from Late Miocene time onward, leading to the harsh highland‐steppe environments reigning there today.

Fossil vertebrates, especially mammals, of the Neogene-Quaternary of Central Argentina were fundamental to the construction of time and rock-time scales and the knowledge of the biotic evolution of southern South America. The poverty of fossiliferous localities constrained with radiometric and/or paleomagnetic data heavily complicated the correlation of different faunas and their temporal allocation. The Cerro Azul Formation (Argentina) constitutes a suitable example of this situation but also enlarged because its fossils have been collected from scattered and isolated small outcrops whose chronological ordering was based on the "stage of evolution" of some rodents. We present here new dates for the fauna/locality of Telén (La Pampa Province) plus extensive biochronological analyses covering 16 fossiliferous localities referred to Cerro Azul Formation. Two dates from an "escoria" sample gave 7.09 Ma for Telén assemblage, an age in accordance with that obtained from an independent faunal analysis. Faunal ordination and age obtained with regression analyses identify a succession of faunas/localities that cover the time range between 8-5.33 Ma. The older assemblages (e.g., Cerro Bota) appear to be transitional between Chasicoan and "Huayquerian" faunas. The first records of procyonids and cricetid rodents, two North American lineages, are not synchronic (7 and 5.7 Ma, respectively). Our results show important temporal overlapping among the proposed successive rodent "biozones". The use of the "stage of evolution" in the analyses does not improve the results, suggesting that its application without independent chronological/ biostratigraphical constraints is not appropriate.

Arenas Blancas is a poorly known fossiliferous site located in the lower reach of the Chasicó creek (Buenos Aires Province, Argentina), with great relevance from a biostratigraphic viewpoint. The Macrochorobates scalabrinii Biozone was defined in this site, proposed as the biostratigraphic basis of the early Huayquerian Stage/Age (Late Miocene); however, the geological context and faunal record of this site have never been studied in detail. In this work, we perform a multi-proxy analysis of the Arenas Blancas site, as well as a nearby site here called Curva de la Vaca, and provide new interpretations on their origin, age, and biostratigraphy. Sedimentological, stratigraphic, and geomorphological characteristics of both sites suggest that the sequences include fluvial/alluvial deposits that represent Quaternary terraces. The taxonomic analysis of the Arenas Blancas faunal assemblage evidences the presence of 14 mammal taxa, together with some fishes, reptiles, and birds; the assemblage is correlated with the assemblage from the Cerro Azul Formation assigned to the Chasicoan Stage/Age (Late Miocene), also recovered from the lower reach of the Chasicó creek. The use of the taxa proposed in previous works to characterize the Macrochorobates scalabrinii Biozone (including this species) is not supported due to their taxonomic status and/or temporal distribution. Taphonomic evaluation indicates that the assemblage is constituted by reworked specimens; in this frame, it is proposed that fluvio/alluvial events, occurred during the Late Pleistocene-Holocene, eroded the Upper Miocene substrate and reworked fossil remains. Based on the present evidence, the Macrochorobates scalabrinii Biozone is here rejected as a valid biostratigraphic unit.
