Reclassification of Pediococcus urinaeequi (ex Mees 1934) Garvie 1988 as Aerococcus urinaeequi comb. nov.

Abstract: The taxonomic status of Pediococcus urinaeequi is described, and the transfer of the species to the genus Aerococcus with the name Aerococcus urinaeequi comb. nov. is proposed, on the basis of the analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequence and DNA-DNA hybridization data.

“…AJ315640). Two 16S rRNA gene sequences were determined for the type strain of L. vaccinostercus: the sequence for NRIC 1075 T was obtained as described by Endo & Okada (2005) and sequence for LMG 9215 T was obtained as described by Felis et al (2005). Since the two L. vaccinostercus sequences were not identical (3 mismatches), questions arose about the authenticity of the investigated subcultures of the type strain of the latter species.…”

“…recA gene sequences were obtained using the degenerate primers recEXT-f (59-GGCTATGAAACA-AATTGAAAAACAATWYGGNAARGG-39) and recEXT1-r (59-TGTTTAAACGGTGGAGCAACTTTRTTYTTNAC-39) and the reaction mixture reported by Dellaglio et al (2005). Amplification reactions were carried out with an initial denaturation step of 5 min at 94 u C, followed by 35 cycles of 45 s at 94 uC, 2 min at 50 uC and 105 s at 72 uC and a final extension at 72 uC for 7 min.…”

“…The former [Pediococcus] urinaeequi has recently been reclassified as Aerococcus urinaeequi on the basis of 16S rRNA gene sequencing and DNA-DNA hybridizations (Felis et al, 2005). Based on the phylogeny, P. dextrinicus is distantly related to the other pediococci (Dobson et al, 2002) and is also phenotypically distinguished from other Pediococcus species by the combination of the production of L(+) lactate as the end product of glucose metabolism and the production of CO 2 from gluconate (Back, 1978;Simpson & Taguchi, 1995).…”
