Recirculating aquaculture system with three phase fluidized bed reactor: Carbon and nitrogen removal

Abstract: The core objective of the study was to evaluate the organic matter and nitrogen removal efficiency in a recirculating aquaculture system for the intensive laboratory-bred rainbow trout. The treatment system consisted of an upflow reactor which operated at a hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 18 and 36 min, a pre-filtration unit with HRT of 4.9 and 9.8 min, a three-phase airlift fluidized bed reactor operated at HRT between 5 and 11 min, a granular unit for the upflow and the fluidized bed reactors effluents fil… Show more

“…The reactors were constituted by a system of concentric tubes, whose hydrodynamic behavior was based on the data reported by Sánchez‐Ortiz and Matsumoto, [ 27 ] and the geometric configuration evaluated by Cárdenas and Sánchez‐Ortiz. [ 28 ] Each ATPAFBRWIC had a funnel on top made of a 5‐mm thick acrylic plate, with which the speed of the three‐phase flow was reduced and the sedimentation of the carrier was promoted. The reactors were made of a PVC sanitary pipe with a diameter of 0.160 m for the external tube and 0.076 m for the internal tube, the latter was installed in its lower part, 10 cm from the base, an air diffuser made of PVC pipe of diameter 0.032 m to which 216 perforations of diameter 0.79 cm were made; the heights of the external and internal tubes were, respectively, 2.70 and 2.20 m. The water column inside each reactor was 2.30 m, the volume of liquid contained in the outer tube was 0.046 m 3 , and that of the hopper was 0.007 m 3 , for a total reactor volume of 0.053 m 3 .…”
