Reciprocal influences between parenting and adolescent problem-solving behavior.

Abstract: This investigation evaluated the hypothesis that the development of either effective or disruptive adolescent problem-solving behavior is reciprocally associated with the child-rearing strategies of parents. Longitudinal data collected over 3 time points from a large sample of families were analyzed at l-year and 2-year measurement intervals by using structural equation modeling. Parent and adolescent behavior was assessed by independent observers. Reciprocal parent-adolescent interactions occurred primarily i… Show more

“…The "Conflict Discussion" or "Revealed Differences" task (e.g., Reuter & Conger, 1995) has been used relatively frequently, as have a number of other tasks such as "planning a vacation" (Donenberg & Weisz, 1997) or discussing family activities (Reuter & Conger, 1998). We selected the two tasks for the present study to parallel the internalizing and externalizing psychopathology that was the focus of the study; i.e., the Conflict Discussion focuses on the behavioral conflict that is central to externalizing problems whereas the Close Feelings task focuses on the affect and emotional relationship that is central to internalizing problems.…”

“…These can best be found when the measurement interval allows children sufficient time to experience significant behavior change (Jang & Smith, 1997). The best time interval may be highly dependent on the developmental stage of the children and therefore very difficult to determine Rueter & Conger, 1998). Our results suggest that two years could be a relevant interval of time to appraise the impact of the early risk factors under consideration.…”
