Quelques cercaires de Melanopsis praemorsa L. en Algérie par Teresa Pojmanska et Claude Combes Résumé. -L'examen parasitologique de Melanopsis praemorsa (Gastéropodes, Prosobranches) récoltés dans plusieurs localités situées le long de l'Oued Tafna, près de Tlemcen (Algérie) permet de décrire six espèces de cercaires de Trématodes, appartenant aux types furcocercaire, gymnocéphale, xiphidiocercaire virgula, cotylicerque, cercariaeum et pleurolophocerque. La furcocercaire est identifiée à l'espèce Szidatia joyeuxi (Cyathocotylidae) et la cercaire cotylicerque à l'espèce Nicolla gallica (Opecoelidae) ; le cercariaeum est rapporté au genre Parasymphylodora (Monorchiidae) ; les autres cercaires sont désignées sous les noms de Cercaria algerica I, II, III et leurs affinités sont discutées.

Specimens of Cottus gobio and Noeriiarheilus barbatulus from the River Avon, Hampshire, were examined between July 1970 and July 1971. Both fish were found to act as hosts for Nicolla gallica (adult), Poinphorhynchus laevis (adult) and Triuenophorus nodulosus (plerocercoid). The incidence and intensity of infection were lower in M. barbatulus than in C. gobio, and this was related to differences in host diet. A small number of N. bavbatulus were also found to harbour Proteocephahs toridosus. Seasonal cycles of incidence and intensity were evident in N. gallica, with a peak occurring in the winter. P. laevis and T. nodulosus showed no such cycles. Increasing host size was associated with a higher infection of both N. gallira and P. laevis, but not T. nodulosus. The diet of the host was considered to be important in influencing this increase. Differences in host reproductive condition affected the population levels of N . gallica only, where an increased parasite burden was evident in gravid female fish. This was considered to influence the observed increase in incidence and intensity of this parasite during the winter. None of the parasites showed any seasonal maturation cycles. There was no evidence of any interactions between the parasite populations. Host diet and the availability of infective larvae were considered to be the most important features influencing the number of parasites which became established, and the rate at which this occurred. Temperature probably acted indirectly on the establishment of N . gallica, by controlling the availability of the larval stages, and also, by influencing the host reproductive condition, on the length of time for which the parasite was retained by the host.

Precocious egg production, i.e. progenesis, has been documented for a number of species in scattered reports throughout the trematode literature. The last 2 extensive studies on the subject date from Buttner in the early 1950s (in French) and from Tang in the early 1980s (in Chinese). Overall, 43 species were then known for their ability to produce eggs at the metacercarial stage while still in the second intermediate host. Here, we update the list, and document the existence of progenesis in a total of 79 digenean trematode species, for which we provide information on the taxonomy of the hosts, the facultative or obligate character of progenesis, relevant references, as well as some other pertinent biological information. We then review the subject by asking 7 questions of fundamental evolutionary importance. These include: What favours progenetic development? What are the associated costs and benefits? How are progenetic eggs released from the host? While exposing the various opinions of previous authors, we attempt to give a synthetic overview and stress on the importance of the metacercarial cyst wall (whether it is present, and if so its thickness) in the evolution and the adoption of a progenetic life-cycle.
