Recharge of the plio-quaternary water table aquifer in Tunisian chotts region estimated from stable isotopes

Abstract: The hydrodynamic groundwater data and stable isotopes of water have been used jointly for better understanding of upward leakage and mixing processes in the Djerid aquifer system (southwestern Tunisia). The aquifer system is composed of the upper unconfined Plio-Quaternary (PQ) aquifer, the intermediate (semi-)confined Complex Terminal (CT) aquifer and the deeper confined Continental Intercalaire (CI) aquifer. A total of 41 groundwater samples from the CT and PQ aquifers were collected during June 2001. The st… Show more

“…The average 18 O and 2 H contents of rainfall at Sfax, located about 300 km northeast of the study area, are −4.6 and −23.3‰, respectively. Stable isotope composition of rainfall was also analysed at Nefta city, 80 km south of the Chott Gharsa plain (Kamel 2010). Rainfall samples collected during the period 2000-2003 at Nefta meteorological station (33 • 51 11 N; 7 • 51 28 E, 72 m a.s.l.)…”
