Recent Trends in Squamous Cell Carcinoma of the Anus Incidence and Mortality in the United States, 2001–2015

Abstract: Background Squamous cell carcinoma of the anus (SCCA) incidence is rising in the United States. Study of incidence trends by stage at diagnosis, age-specific and birth cohort patterns, and trends in mortality could provide evidence for a true increase and etiological clues for the increase in incidence. Methods Using the US Cancer Statistics dataset, we examined trends in SCCA incidence (2001–2015) and mortality (2001–2016) r… Show more

“…Attention to sarcopenia could benefit patients with ASCC in a variety of ways. ASCC has one of the most rapidly rising incidences of all malignancies, particularly among women, young black men, and the elderly 1 . Although a majority of patients with ASCC are cured with chemoradiation, those who have persistent or recurrent disease do poorly, with a 5‐year survival rate of 40% to 60% 14‐16 .…”

“…The incidence of anal squamous cell carcinoma (ASCC) is increasing at a rate of 2.7% per year 1 . This rise is notable particularly in older patients, with a 4.2% and 5.0% increase in the incidence of ASCC in the 6th decade of life for men and women, respectively 1 .…”

“…Although cervical cancer rates have declined overall, a recent study by researchers at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston concluded that anal cancer incidence and mortality rates have increased significantly since 2001 2 . In particular, the study found that black male millennials have a nearly 5‐fold higher risk of developing anal cancer compared with their older counterparts, and that the risk among white men and women aged 60 years or younger has doubled.…”

“…Furthermore, patients are presenting with more advanced disease. 1 We are increasingly unable to prevent anal cancer and are doing a poorer job of keeping these patients alive. We are failing our patients.…”
