There is a growing interest in post-industrial landscape redevelopment and public participation in urban planning process. This study examined the public preference on post-industrial land transformation projects. A semi-qualitative methodology was used throughout the application of a questionnaire and interviews. Data on public perception of post-industrial landscape that incorporates significant environmental, cultural and historic assets were collected from 450 residents. Results illustrate that community attitudes to brownfield regeneration projects are positive. Urban growth should consider the redevelopment of derelict and/or abandoned areas instead of consuming new green areas. The results illustrated that, according to public perception, the most important aspect in the redevelopment of the study area is the creation of multifunctional areas, and that this aspect is statistically related with touristic activities, mobility and accessibility, use of renewable energies, environmental education, economic redevelopment, and safety/security. The researchers suggest that coupling the information gathered throughout the public preference process with the intrinsic characteristics of each landscape is helpful in understanding community expectations in order to inform urban regeneration projects that consider the economic, environmental and cultural functions of sites.

Urban spaces are pervaded by interpretive and reactive technologies that shape and are shaped by its inhabitants, with an increasingly active role for citizen technologists. Yet the role of domestic spaces in shaping lived experience within the urban environment, and subsequent technological interventions, is often overlooked. Homes are framed as closed-off environments which isolate their inhabitants from the city, despite being porous spaces that are also filled with ubiquitous computing. In this paper we draw on the participatory design and user innovation literatures to present the methodology for the "Homesense" research project that explored how users design and develop "smart" technologies within their own homes, based on the intersection of their concurrent urban/domestic lived experience. Kits of open-source hardware were used as cultural probes, and co-located "lead users" provided technical expertise. This methodology demonstrates the importance of physical space and location in user-led domestic activities, and of combinations of technical and "lived" expertise in developing these interventions.

Resumen AbstractLa perspectiva transaccional resulta muy atractiva para analizar y actuar sobre el espacio público en la escala de barrio. Sin embargo, las diferencias metodológicas y de lenguaje entre las distintas disciplinas implicadas lo hacen bastante complejo. En este artículo se presenta una estrategia cualitativa de análisis multimétodo, como una propuesta que integra los diferentes lenguajes gráficos y textuales que dominan en los análisis unidisciplinares del espacio público, a través de un trabajo de espacialización gráfica de resultados.Se triangularon diversas técnicas y se sometieron a un mismo proceso analítico (Grounded Theory), lo que apoyado por los programas de procesamiento Atlas/ti y Arcgis hicieron posible ligar aspectos gráficos (mapas e imágenes) con observaciones de los investigadores y narraciones biográficas de los participantes, asociando de esta manera, espacios físicos concretos con la evolución y construcción de significados y usos espaciales. PresentaciónEl Espacio Público es un objeto de estudio donde cohabitan teorías del diseño urbano y de las ciencias sociales, disciplinas que establecen distinciones y puntuaciones explicativas que se desprenden más de la especificidad de sus objetos de estudio y de las demandas de acreditación en sus propios campos, que de la realidad integrada de lo socioespacial.
