Power systems are undergoing a significant transformation around the globe. Renewable energy sources (RES) are replacing their conventional counterparts, leading to a variable, unpredictable, and distributed energy supply mix. The predominant forms of RES, wind, and solar photovoltaic (PV) require inverter-based resources (IBRs) that lack inherent synchronous inertia desired for the grid and thereby warrant additional interventions for maintaining grid stability by organizing various contingency planning. Such scenarios become more pertinent in the wake of rapid decarbonization objectives adopted by different countries, stringent grid code compliance, and improved grid resilience milestones. Energy storage technologies can potentially address these concerns viably at different levels. This paper reviews different forms of storage technology available for grid application and classifies them on a series of merits relevant to a particular category. The varied maturity level of these solutions is discussed, depending on their adaptability and their notion towards pragmatic implementations. Some specific technologies that require particular mention are -hydrogen (H 2 ) storage with fuel cells (FC) as the reconversion medium, molten metal, and gravity batteries due to their highly scalable and siteable characteristics participating in load shifting; batteries and H 2 FC due to their high flexibility for peak shaving; and flywheels and supercapacitors for quick response applications, such as frequency regulation and voltage support. Various performance metrics are critically evaluated by comparing them on their usability scale, thus helping readers make a subjective judgment on a particular technology while being aware of the forthcoming limitations. Finally, the paper delves into some emerging trends that decide the selection of a particular technology based on life cycle assessment, economic viability, and commercial and environmental considerations that are presented under the given circumstances. In normal operating conditions, the mains voltage level provided by low-voltage distribution networks follows time-varying patterns within permissible limits. The statistical characterisation of disturbances inserted into the power grid by nonlinear electrical devices is useful since operators are able to establish power quality limits and assess the residual capacity of networks for new smart installations, which may include a multitude of power electronic devices. Existing standards related to emission tests recommend using a power supply source in the measurement circuit with a nominal voltage parameter. However, the range of permissible variations of relevant supply voltage parameters may have an impact on conducted emissions. It can also be considered that the symptoms of supply voltage variations may manifest themselves differently depending on the equipment’s architecture and also the range of frequency observation with reference to harmonics and supraharmonics. The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze non-intentional conducted emissions injected into the power grid by lighting devices, methodically, by numbers of studies under different supply voltage conditions within two frequency bands. The emission is evaluated separately in two ranges: up to 2 kHz and 9-150 kHz. Obtained results show that the level of conducted emission introduced into the low voltage network by modern lighting sources like fluorescent and LED lamps varies with the supply voltage level compared to the emission generated in the nominal voltage level condition. Additionally, in the case of a spectrum of higher frequencies, some trends of shifting of the characteristic frequency bands are recorded. The potential of the obtained results is to complement the knowledge of the emission of modern lighting sources, which can be further used for digital models of these devices and to estimate the impact on the grid under real working conditions.

Purpose The purpose of this study is to provide the enhancement of power quality of a high power-rated voltage source inverter driven induction motor with a three-phase, three-level neutral point clamped converter placed at the front end, while a passive power filter is connected in shunt with it. The improvement in power quality can be achieved by reducing the total harmonic distortion in source current. The controllers were designed for the linearization of the high-power induction motor drive. A control method is presented for the regulation of the common DC-link voltage. Design/methodology/approach The induction motor is modeled using its dynamic equations, and a decoupling controller is designed to linearize the nonlinear dynamics of the drive through feedback. The common DC-link voltage of the proposed front-end connected converter is monitored and controlled through a control method which feeds the pulse width modulated inverter that drives the induction motor. A passive power filter is designed to meet the reactive power requirement of the system in addition to improve the power quality. Findings Simulations were carried out for the proposed topology of the drive mechanism, and the outcomes were analyzed by a comparative analysis of the drive system both in the presence of the passive filter as well as in the absence of the filter. The total harmonic distortion is found to be reduced enough to meet the standards with the designed filter, and the reactive power is also compensated considerably. The input power factor at the supply side is maintained almost to unity, and the DC-link voltage of the proposed circuit topology is maintained at the desired level. The overall performance of the drive system was found to be useful and economical. Originality/value A new topology of a front-end connected three-level neutral point clamped converter to a high power-rated induction motor drive is proposed. The drive is fed by a pulse width modulated inverter with a common DC-link with the front end connected converter. A passive filter is designed with respect to the reactive power requirement of the system and connected in shunt to the converter at the supply side. Control schemes are designed and used for the drive system and also for the regulation of the common DC-link voltage of the proposed front end connected converter.
