“…Elderly women are more often anemic than younger individuals and men, so the half-life of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF may be long in older women, which may result in the blood concentration of 2,3,4,7,8-PeCDF in female Yusho patients being higher than that in males. Furthermore, a previous study (Iida et al, 1999) demonstrated that the concentrations of PCDFs, PCDDs and coplanar PCBs in blood and sebum from Yusho and Yucheng patients 17 or 26 years after the initial incident, respectively, clearly reflected the chemical concentrations in the ingested contaminated oil. The secretion of sebum including dioxins may be one of the pathways of dioxins excretion in Yusho, and differences in the amounts of sebum between females and males may explain why female Yusho patients have higher dioxins levels than males.…”
