Burns can cause inflammation and delayed healing, necessitating alternative therapies due to the limitations of conventional treatments. Propolis, a natural bee‐produced substance, has shown promise in facilitating burn healing. This literature review provides a comprehensive overview of propolis' mechanisms of action, wound‐healing properties, and its application in treating skin burns. Propolis contains bioactive compounds with antimicrobial, antioxidant, and anti‐inflammatory properties, making it a promising candidate for managing skin burn injuries. It helps prevent infections, neutralize harmful free radicals, and promote a well‐balanced inflammatory response. Moreover, propolis aids in wound closure, tissue regeneration, collagen synthesis, cellular proliferation, and angiogenesis, contributing to tissue regeneration and remodeling. The article discusses various propolis extracts, extraction methods, chemical composition, and optimized formulations like ointments and creams for burn wound treatment. Considerations regarding dosage and safety are addressed. Further research is needed to fully understand propolis' mechanisms, determine optimal formulations, and establish suitable clinical dosages. Nevertheless, propolis' natural origin and demonstrated benefits make it a compelling avenue for burn care exploration, potentially complementing existing therapies and improving burn management outcomes.

Given the growing demand among consumers of the international market for propolis, it is important to review the compliance of national documentation with international, particularly the leading countries in the production and processing of this product. Integration and adaptation of national legislation to the norms of the world community legislation also requires revision of approaches to the quality and safety of propolis. Therefore, the purpose of the study was to analyse the current international and national regulatory legal acts of the leading countries of the world, which play a key role in the international market for the production and sale of propolis in terms of safety and quality of propolis. Authors used the Torraco method to analyse and synthesise scientific and regulatory data; the Springer scientific and metric database and the Google Scholar search. The materials included regulatory documents of Ukraine, EU, Brazil, Argentina, Poland, Mexico, East African region. It was established that the criteria for assessing the quality of propolis in international regulatory and technical documentation are organoleptic (appearance, consistency, colour, smell, taste), physicochemical (dry matter, total ash content, wax, resin) microbiological (yeast, moulds, Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus, Candida albicans, Paenibacillus, Salmonella) indicators of biological activity (flavonoids, oxidation, phenols, antioxidant activity, ethanol-soluble resins) and contamination (heavy metals, pesticide and antibiotic residues, radionuclides). The study revealed the non-compliance of the current regulatory document in Ukraine with the requirements of international regulations, namely in terms of: phenol content, ethanol and water-soluble resins, dry matter; total ash content; antioxidant activity; colony-forming units. It was determined that in Ukraine propolis is not divided into categories depending on wax impurities; the ambient temperature is not accounted for when determining the consistency index; botanical origin and methods of its selection are also not considered when assessing organoleptic properties. The approach for regulating the propolis market in Ukraine is substantiated as such that will contribute to the formation of added value for raw propolis when grouped by purpose and method of production and processing. The materials of the article are of practical value for the formation of new and harmonization of existing normative and technical regulations on the quality of propolis and can be applied by the working party on beekeeping development under the Ministry of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine

Propolis is a sticky resinous substance collected from buds, leaves, stems of wild plants and processed by bees, which has bactericidal properties and which they use to seal openings in the hive, polish the walls of wax cells, embalm the corpses of enemies. The analysis of research and publications gives grounds to conclude that Ukraine has not yet paid sufficient attention to the conditions of propolis production. There are no devices and equipment to improve the process of production of safe and high-quality propolis, which will meet the high requirements of regulatory acts on the quality and safety of food products and raw materials. Currently, apiaries use methods of collecting propolis, which require considerable human labor, are not economically efficient, and the resulting product does not meet the quality requirements of market operators. Therefore, there is a need to improve existing technologies for obtaining propolis, to improve sanitary-hygienic conditions of production, to increase productivity and economic efficiency, mechanization, and automation of the production process. The goal of our work was to develop a new propolis collecting device. The work was carried out as a part of the dissertation research at the Department of Standardization and Certification of Agricultural Products of the National University of Life and Environmental Sciences of Ukraine during 2020–2021. A new propolis collecting device has been designed and manufactured. The design of the device shafts and the principle of mechanical cleaning of the grids from the propolis, laid down during its development, can be used to develop highly automated lines for cleaning the grids. The use of the device in industrial apiaries in countries with tropical and subtropical climates is possible by placing the device in honeycomb storage, if available, or in a manufacturing area equipped with air conditioning. For a good cleaning of the grids with propolis using the device, it is sufficient to cool the grids at a temperature of +5 °C for 60–90 minutes, depending on the type of propolis. The device can be used at apiaries in Ukraine and other countries where the production of propolis from bee colonies is carried out using elastic grids. The use of the device ensures the production of pure propolis without mechanical impurities, which meets the requirements of current legislation. The developed device is patented, a patent № 139736 “Propolis collecting device”.
