Recent Research on Bioactive Xanthones from Natural Medicine: Garcinia hanburyi

Abstract: Abstract. Garcinia hanburyi, a tropical plant found in south Asia, has a special long history in the development of both medicine and art. This review mainly focuses on the pharmacy research of the bioactive compounds from the plant in recent years. Preparative and analysis separation methods were introduced. Moreover, the chemical structure of the isolated compounds was included. The studies of biological activities of the caged xanthones from the plant, including antitumor, anti-HIV-1, antibacterial, and neu… Show more

“…Xanthones and flavones frequently found in nature [8][9][10][11][12][13] correspond to "privileged structures," showing a wide variety of biological activities [9,11,[14][15][16]. Among these activities, the effect on molecular targets of AD have been widely studied and explored [6,[17][18][19][20][21][22].…”

“…Anti-HIV-1 activity of gambogic acid ( 28 ) and morellic acid ( 31 ), by inhibiting the HIV-1 reverse transcriptase enzyme [62] and the antiatherosclerosis activity of gambogic acid ( 28 ) via inhibition of vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation were also significant [75]. The isolation and biological activity evaluation of these compounds have been extensively reviewed by several groups [76,77,78,79,80].…”

“…Numerous reviews by several research teams have focused on xanthone compounds, a small subset of which are caged xanthones [48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56]. In addition, the therapeutic potential of gambogic acid has recently been highlighted in several elegant reviews [57][58][59][60] and a book section [61]. Herein, this review does not attempt to overlap with those excellent published works but instead focuses on the structural diversity and biological investigation of newly isolated caged xanthone compounds from the years 2008 to 2021.…”
