Recent rates of forest harvest and conversion in North America

Abstract: Incorporating ecological disturbance into biogeochemical models is critical for estimating current and future carbon stocks and fluxes. In particular, anthropogenic disturbances, such as forest conversion and wood harvest, strongly affect forest carbon dynamics within North America. This paper summarizes recent (2000–2008) rates of extraction, including both conversion and harvest, derived from national forest inventories for North America (the United States, Canada, and Mexico). During the 2000s, 6.1 million … Show more

“…Delaunay triangulation is used to create a Triangulated Irregular Network (TIN) of ground hits, and the TIN is used to linearly interpolate DTM elevations on a 1 m raster grid. Examples of products and details about how these data have been processed are available in Cook et al [13]. G-LiHT data on average have more than six shots per m 2 , and pixels with fewer than this were excluded from our analyses.…”

“…Field plots are re-measured on a rotating basis every 5-years in the Eastern US (10-years in the Western US), and these data provide a wealth of information including tree height, diameter at breast height, stem volume, species type, etc. This forest plot information can be used for C stock estimates and change analysis [13]. FIA surveys are then used to constrain aerial photography interpretation to produce maps from field samples.…”

“…The recent rate of reforestation and afforestation in the United States may be as high as 700,000 ha per year (Masek et al 2011), which is similar to the rate over the entire 20 th century (Birdsey and Lewis 2003). These large increases are responsible for a relatively stable area (about 304 million ha) of U.S. forests over the last century after accounting for deforestation A study of afforestation opportunities in the Midwest (not including Wisconsin) by Niu and Duiker (2006) showed significant potential in Michigan, especially in …”

“…Forest conversion not only releases CO 2 but significantly decreases the capacity of a site to sequester additional carbon in the future (Ingerson 2007). Deforestation in the United States has recently affected about 355,000 ha per year (Masek et al 2011). Estimated carbon losses from deforestation in the United States are approximately 23 TgC per year based on analysis from1987 to 1997 (Birdsey and Lewis 2002) and equate to more than 10 percent of the net increase in carbon stocks on existing forest land.…”

“…Additionally, there is a strong link with the Programa Mexicano del Carbono (PMC, Mexican carbon program), the Red Mexicana de Investigación Ecológica a Largo Plazo (Mex-LTER, Mexican long- term ecological research network), and international networks such as the North American Carbon Program (CarboNA), and Tropi-Dry. MexFlux is expected to have a fundamental role within FLUXNET since Mexican ecosystems are underrepresented and this limits the production of synthesis studies across regions, which are important for scientific understanding and policy-making across North America (Harmon et al, 2011;Masek et al, 2011;Vargas et al, 2012a).…”
