Recent Progression in Sarcopenia and Sarcopenic Obesity

Abstract: One of the important changes of body composition with ageing is the increase of fat mass and visceral fat and the decrease of muscle mass and strength. Sarcopenia, the age-related decrease in skeletal muscle mass, is associated with functional disability, falls, and mortality. Recent studies found that older people with low skeletal muscle mass and obesity (sarcopenic obesity) have a higher risk for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. However, a consensus of the definition of sarcopenia is lacking in clinic… Show more

“…Therefore, one can have a high BMI with weak muscle strength due to sarcopenic obesity. Jang[33] reported the prevalence of sarcopenic obesity is 35% in men and 48% in women in elderly Koreans. High prevalence of sarcopenic obesity in women may explain why BMI was not found to be associated with grip strength in women in our study.…”

“…Recently, Korea has experienced rapid ageing of population because of decreased birth rate and prolonged average lifespan, and obese population continuously increases because of reduced physical activities resulted from westernized diet and transportation development [1]. According to National Statistical Office, obesity prevalence of adults over 19 in Korea was 30.9% in 2014 and it has been maintained at the level of 31~32% for recent 7 years.…”

“…Decrease in muscle amount reduces basal metabolic rate (BMR), increases body mass, and debases various physical functions [1]. Besides, skeletal muscle is primary tissue responsible for insulin-mediated glucose disposal and it is known that skeletal muscle decrease make influence on insulin resistance separately from obesity [12].…”

“…The following conditions are involved with chronic persistent inflammation related to sarcopenia: degenerative changes in muscles, decreases in anabolic hormone production and increases in resistance, dysfunctional cytokine secretion, nutritional imbalance, and a reduction in physical activity 3) . Sarcopenia reduces normal muscle behavior, and increases the risk of fractures and falls 4) ; furthermore, it is associated with increased mortality and increased hospital admission rates 5,6) .…”
