Nowadays, scarcity arises in almost all our basic needs, including water, fuel, and food. Recycling used and scrapped things for a valuable commodity is highly appreciable for compensating for the globally fast-growing demand. This paper aims to investigate waste tyre oil for preparing biodiesel for CI engines by enhancing their performance with hybrid nanoparticles for preparing nanofuel and hybrid nanofuel. The nanoparticles (30–40 nm) of MWCNT and TiO2 were utilized to prepare nanofuels with nanoparticle concentrations of MWCNT (300 ppm) and TiO2 (300 ppm), respectively. In the case of hybrid nanofuel, the nanoparticle concentration of MWCNT (150 ppm) and TiO2 (150 ppm) was preferred. The performance of the proposed nanofuel and hybrid nanofuel with pure diesel was evaluated. The proposed fuel performance outperforms the combustion performance, has higher engine efficiency, and has fewer emissions. The best performances were noticed in hybrid nanofuel that has 32% higher brake thermal efficiency than diesel and 24% and 4% lower BSFC and peak pressure than diesel, respectively. The emission performance is also 29%, 50%, and 13% lower in CO, HC, and CO2 emissions than that in pure diesel.

The integration of renewable energy sources into the manufacturing sector is a recent development, which is prompting companies to explore innovative approaches to enhance their production systems through efficient renewable energy utilization. Within this context, renewable energy-aware machine scheduling has emerged as a pivotal area requiring novel strategies for sustainability. This study aims to evaluate the effect of intermittent renewable energy supply on sustainable machine scheduling by incorporating the option of machine speed for the first time in the literature. A two-stage stochastic program is developed to model the problem and examine the value of the stochastic solution. Additionally, an efficient genetic algorithm is proposed for approximate problem solving. Extensive test study is conducted to explore and generalize the sustainable operational policies derived from the proposed method. The results reveal key scheduling strategies that promote sustainability in production by reducing non-renewable dependence. Notably, the study underlines the importance of considering uncertainties in renewable supply in scheduling, especially under conditions of substantial job and machine scales, high-capacity but variable renewable supply, and flexible job deadlines. As an illustration, in the context of a test case involving 20 jobs and 3 machines, the value of the stochastic solution amounts to 68.72 units. This finding implies that failing to account for the stochastic nature of the renewable energy supply would result in an additional energy expenditure of 68.72 units from the grid. These findings offer valuable insights for corporate management and scheduling operations, particularly as they navigate the transition towards green manufacturing practices.

Sustainable development is imperative, and the worldwide energy production must focus on the transition from petroleum derivatives to biomass-based biofuels and bioproducts to achieve a bio-based economy. The global interest in the processing of waste biomass to obtain bio-based products is continuously increasing. However, biorefineries have not yet been consolidated. The effective conversion of biomass components for the generation of value-added biochemicals and biofuels is a determining factor for the economic success of biorefineries. Therefore, exhaustive research has been performed to consolidate the biorefinery industry. This review summarizes the current advances in liquid biofuel production and solid catalysts prepared from waste biomass, as well as their advantages, drawbacks, and statistical data. It offers an extensive perspective, covering conventional methods and cutting-edge techniques such as biochemical and thermochemical biomass conversion technologies (e.g., hydrolysis, fermentation, pyrolysis, and gasification) to produce bioalcohols, biodiesel, renewable diesel, bio-jet, and bio-oil. In addition, the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts using residual biomass and different synthesis routes and their role in biofuel production were analyzed. This review contributes to the analysis of the importance of identifying and valorizing a wide spectrum of raw materials (i.e., urban, forestry, industrial, and agricultural) that have the potential to be used as catalyst precursors and biofuel feedstock. Finally, a techno-economic analysis, the main challenges, and the future scope of the diverse methods used to prepare biofuels and catalysts are discussed. This review examines numerous aspects from biomass to catalysts, thus providing relevant information for researchers, students, policymakers, and industry experts. Graphical abstract
