Recent progress on exciplex-emitting OLEDs

Abstract: The thermally-activated-delayed-fluorescence (TADF) characteristics makes exciplexes being the hot subject in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) research field. The theoretical limit for the efficiency of the conventional fluorescent OLEDs have been leaped by exploiting the triplet harvesting ability of exciplexes. Exciplexes are easily formed by blending electron donor molecules and electron acceptor molecules, which are generally hole transporting materials and electron transporting materials, respectiv… Show more

“…D-A based bimolecular exciplex systems with intermolecular CT interaction have already been developed as a main kind of TADF-emitting system, after the pioneering work of Adachi et al [61]. Such systems have superiority in flexible D-A combination and energy level modulation [62,63]. The accurate regulation of D-A interaction, however, is dependent on not only the electronic inductive effects of the D and A molecules but also the D-A distance determined by the steric hindrances of the two components.…”

“…In 2012, thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials were first reported by the Adachi group, and are regarded as new generation emitters by academia and industry [12,13]. Such materials have a small singlet-triplet energy gap (∆E ST ), so that triplet excitons can be upconverted into singlet excitons via reverse intersystem crossing (RISC) at room temperature, thereby generating delayed fluorescence [14][15][16].…”

“…Triplet–triplet annihilation (TTA) was proposed as another mechanism for the triplet harvesting process in TTA-dominant exciplex-emitting OLEDs. ( Jankus et al, 2013 ; Kim and Kim, 2019 ). Furthermore, inspired by exciplex-based OLEDs, the novel concept of long-persistent luminescence has been confirmed by Adachi and co-workers.…”
