Recent progress of the tumor microenvironmental metabolism in cervical cancer radioresistance

Abstract: Radiotherapy is widely used as an indispensable treatment option for cervical cancer patients. However, radioresistance always occurs and has become a big obstacle to treatment efficacy. The reason for radioresistance is mainly attributed to the high repair ability of tumor cells that overcome the DNA damage caused by radiotherapy, and the increased self-healing ability of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Accumulating findings have demonstrated that the tumor microenvironment (TME) is closely related to cervical canc… Show more

“…Tumor formation and antitumor immunity are strongly influenced by the TME, which encompasses a variety of immunological and stromal cell types. 84 MRGs and TME immune cell infiltration have been linked in previous stusies. 72,85 We also observed various MRG-lncRNA-related TME cell-infiltrating properties throughout our experiment.…”

“…A significant relationship between the risk‐score signature and immune cell infiltration was also found. Tumor formation and anti‐tumor immunity are strongly influenced by the TME, which encompasses a variety of immunological and stromal cell types 84 . MRGs and TME immune cell infiltration have been linked in previous stusies 72,85 .…”

“…This variation can cause some individuals to develop resistance to radiation therapy ( 7 , 8 ). Consequently, a subset of patients with CC undergoing radiation therapy may fail to achieve effective local disease control, significantly impacting treatment efficacy and long-term prognosis ( 23 , 24 ). Current prognostic and risk assessment systems for CC do not incorporate an evaluation of radiotherapy sensitivity.…”

“…For example, some tumor cells are shown to express programmed cell death ligand-1 (PD-L1), which binds to the programmed cell death protein 1 (PD-1) receptor on the surface of T cells and inhibits their activity ( 23 ). Meanwhile, expression of the HPV E6 and E7 oncogenes upregulates PD-L1 by suppressing p53 and Rb ( 24 , 25 ). The immunosuppressive microenvironment caused by HPV infection is a potential target for immunotherapy.…”
