Recent Progress of Photocatalytic Fenton-Like Process for Environmental Remediation

Abstract: Over the past few decades, Fenton process has been widely studied in environmental remediation. Due to the low efficiency of iron ions recycling, the Fenton efficiency has been seriously impeded for practical application. On this condition, with combination of photocatalysts, it is expected to fully use photo-generated electrons, thus enhancing the photo-Fenton efficiency. This synergistic methodology has assisted many researchers to remove various categories of organic pollutants in discharged wastewater or a… Show more

“…Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are known to be promising choices to remove these adverse pollutants via the production of efficient reactive oxidizing species (ROSs), including hydroxyl radicals (˙OH) and sulfate radicals (SO 4 ˙ − ). 1,2 Among the AOPs, the sulfate-radical-based AOPs (SR-AOPs) have attracted great attention. They are primarily driven by peroxymonosulfate (PMS, KHSO 5 ) and persulfate (PS, K 2 S 2 O 8 ) activation.…”

“…Photocatalysis and Fenton-based reactions are two of the most investigated photoinduced advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the degradation of organic pollutants. [1][2][3][4][5][6] The AOPs are an efficient technology to degrade and mineralize persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in wastewaters, including pharmaceuticals and personal care products, pesticides and herbi-cides, and other products harmful to human health and the planet's ecosystem. 7,8 Indeed, the quality of water is a serious issue worldwide since only 3% of the water on the Earth is consumable, out of which less than 1% is accessible.…”

“…Despite the theoretical feasibility of the NIR active UCPs/Photocatalysts system, reported literature on the topic indicates limited practical success and lower contaminants removal efficiency of the system, often requiring several hours of NIR illumination [54][55][56][57][58] . The combination of different advanced oxidation processes such as photocatalysis and Fenton-like process using H 2 O 2 as an oxidizing agent, is a possible strategy to address the problem of low photoactivity under NIR irradiation [59][60][61] . In this work, we report a smart photocatalytic system based on NaYbF 4 :Tm 3+ UCPs/Ag 3 PO 4 /H 2 O 2 that can be activated both under direct visible light illumination from low-cost blue LEDs (460 ± 10 nm) as well as under NIR illumination, thanks to the NIR-to-UV/visible upconversion by the UCPs.…”

Moreover, not only the presence of H 2 O 2 improves the photoactivity and photostability of Ag 3 PO 4 (by oxidizing back/regenerating the photo-(self)reduced Ag back to Ag + ), but also the process of regeneration/oxidation leads to the formation of reactive oxygen species through a Fenton-like process, even when the photoexcitation process is stopped (light off condition).…”
