Recent Progress in Silicon Carbide-Based Membranes for Gas Separation

Abstract: The scale of research for developing and applying silicon carbide (SiC) membranes for gas separation has rapidly expanded over the last few decades. Given its importance, this review summarizes the progress on SiC membranes for gas separation by focusing on SiC membrane preparation approaches and their application. The precursor-derived ceramic approaches for preparing SiC membranes include chemical vapor deposition (CVD)/chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) deposition and pyrolysis of polymeric precursor. Genera… Show more

“…4 b), asymmetric stretching vibrations at 1220.06 and 1098.03 cm −1 , symmetric stretching vibration at 1794.53 cm −1 , double ring vibration at 1559 cm −1 and T–O bending vibration (T = Al or Si ) observed the structure of zeolite at 457.99 cm −1 . Within the discovered spectrum of 3443.55 cm −1 , because of the phenomenon of molecular sieve, MFI crystals are connected to the loose Si–OH businesses of H-bonds 59 , 60 . Due to the presence of NaOH and TPABr inside the synthesis answer, the 794.53 and 559 cm −1 vibrations are attributed to the C–Na and C–Br bonds (which can also be seen in the spectrum of the membrane in Fig.…”

“…The popularity of SiC UF membranes stems from their ability to provide: (i) high permeate fluxes due to their hydrophilic nature; (ii) a high-quality permeate irrespective of variation in feed quality; (iii) an excellent hydrothermal stability; (iv) a good stability against pressure and pH gradients; and (v) a high porosity and uniform pore size distribution [ 9 , 10 , 11 ]. Furthermore, various preparation methods are available to obtain SiC membranes, namely, sol-gel, and vapor deposition methods [ 12 ]. In general, sol-gel methods require multiple coating cycles of the desired material and high-temperature sintering, which makes the process energy-intensive [ 13 , 14 ].…”

“…Membranes for gas separation have attracted considerable interest from both industry and academia, and membranebased gas separations involving gaseous media such as air separation, hydrogen purification, natural gas purification, H 2 /N 2 separation and CO 2 capture have developed immensely in recent years. 1,2 In general, permeance and selectivity (or separation factors) are two common and fundamental characteristics that describe membrane performance. An ideal membrane should exhibit a high permeance and selectivity.…”
