Recent perspectives of breast cancer prognosis and predictive factors

Abstract: Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer affecting women worldwide. Although there have been great improvements in treating the disease and at present between 80 and 90% of the women survive ≥5-years after their primary diagnosis. However, due to the high incidence of the disease >450,000 women succumb to breast cancer annually worldwide. The majority of improvements in breast cancer survival may be explained through better knowledge of the development and progression of the disease. Consequently, the t… Show more

“…Many factors have been reported as the prognostic factors of patients with breast cancer [ 32 ] and have been used as predictors to predict breast cancer outcomes by several prognostic models over the years. For instance, NPI is based on the tumor size, histopathological grading and lymph node status [ 9 ].…”

“…Clinically diagnosed cancers are more prone to have axillary lymph node metastases with an incidence of 38% to 45% compared with those diagnosed by screening (18% to 25%) [24] . The 5-year survival for tumors of less than 1 cm is reported to be 99%, and for those tumors with 3 to 5 cm is 86% [25] .…”

“…In addition, adjuvant systemic therapy is given depending on the perceived aggressiveness of the removed cancer. Currently the established prognostic parameter include histological grade, tumor size, presence of lymph node metastasis, tumor cell proliferation (Ki67 labeling index; Ki67LI) as well as hormonal receptor and HER2 status ( 2-4 ) (Ki67) ( 5 ). In many patients, supplementary molecular parameters are analyzed ( 6-8 ).…”
