Background. Calcium is an essential element for the growth, activity, and maintenance of the human body. Eggshells are a waste product which has received growing interest as a cheap and effective source of dietary calcium. Yogurt is a food which can be fortified with functional additives, including calcium. The aim of this study was to produce yogurt with a high calcium content by fortification with nano-sized eggshell powder (nano-ESP). Materials and methods. Nano-sized ESP was prepared from pre-boiled and dried eggshell, using a ball mill. Yogurt was prepared from cow's milk supplemented with 3% skimmed milk powder, and from buffalo's milk fortified with 0.1, 0.2 and 0.3% and 0.1, 0.3 and 0.5% nano-ESP respectively. Results. Electron microscopic transmission showed that the powder consisted of nano-sized crystalline structures (~10 nm). Laser scattering showed that particles followed a normal distribution pattern with z-average of 590.5 nm, and had negative zeta-potential of -9.33 ±4.2 mV. Results regarding changes in yogurt composition, acid development, calcium distribution, biochemical changes, textural parameters and sensory attributes have been presented and discussed. Conclusion. The addition of up to 0.3% nano-ESP made cow and buffalo high-calcium yogurts with an acceptable composition and quality. High-calcium yogurt may offer better health benefits, such as combating osteoporosis.

Background: Peripheral nerves may be damaged during an injury and its current standard treatment is using an autologous nerve. Objectives: The purpose of this experimental study is to evaluate and compare the histological results of nerve regeneration after using the eggshell membrane (ESM) guidance channel with autograft. Materials and Methods: Thirty adult male rats were divided into three experimental groups: ESM guidance channel, autograft, and sham surgery. The decalcifying membrane of egg rotated over the Teflon mandrel and dried at 37°C. A 10 mm nerve segment of left sciatic nerve was cut and removed. In ESM group, the ends of the sciatic nerve were telescoped into the nerve guides. In autograft group, the nerve segment was reversed and used as an autologous nerve graft. At 90 days after surgery, all animals were evaluated by histological and immunohistochemical assessment. Results: The diameters of regenerated myelinated fibers were 5.24±2.14 µm for the ESM group, and 5.89±2.99 µm for the autograft group. The number of myelinated axons regenerated in the ESM group (9824±218 nerve fibers) was significantly greater than autograft group (7865±314 nerve fibers) (p<0.05).Conclusion: These findings demonstrate that ESM effectively enhances nerve regeneration in injured rat sciatic nerve.

Considering the better tactile performance (pleasantness) of different materials for example, leather, fur, feather, and so on, which are known to be the tribopositive materials, herein, the tribo‐positive eggshell membrane (ESM) powders derived from waste eggshell were melt‐mixed with polypropylene (PP) to prepare a low‐cost ESM/PP biocomposite of enhanced tactile property. In this regard, in‐plane coefficient of friction (COF) has been examined and found a decreasing trend with increasing the ESM content which may consider towards improving the pleasantness of the composite, and which is due to the increase of surface smoothness and adhesion property laid by incorporation of polar ESM within the nonpolar PP matrix. However, the decrease of COF was not spontaneous. Alternatively, the increase of tribopositive character of the composite due to addition of tribopositive ESM within the tribonegative PP, as investigated by fabricating a single electrode triboelectric nanogenerator (STENG)‐like device made of the ESM/PP composite may be considered potential to realize the enhancement of touch‐feeling performance. The triboelectric results showed well‐correlation not only with the COF, but also with the thermal and mechanical properties of the composite. It is thus, prejudiced that triboelectric investigation can be used as a potential tool to realize/manage the touch‐feeling properties of different products.
