Recent Metal-to-Metal Sealing Technology for Zonal Isolation Applications Demonstrates Potential for Use in Hostile HP/HT Environments

Abstract: Zonal isolation tools, including bridge plugs and straddle systems, using metal-to-metal sealing technology in place of conventional elastomers may radically challenge existing engineering philosophies by providing a pressure sealing system capable of exceeding the limitations of other existing sealing technologies and eliminating many traditional failure modes. Metal-to-metal sealing technology is an innovative type of high expansion seal that uses expanding metal to form a high integrity pressure seal and in… Show more

“…Garfield and Mackenzie discussed the use of metal-to-metal seals in down-hole equipment under high temperature and pressure conditions. 6 Sufficient excitation force is required for metal-to-metal sealing due to the poor resilience of metallic material. 7 Moreover, metal-to-metal contacts may have the tolerance fit change at high temperature differences, making it difficult to provide a reliable seal.…”

“…The conventional sealing of coiled tubing wellhead hanging device were usually used rubber, polymer, and plastic based sealing technologies. The conventional seal have the advantages of simple structure, good initial sealing effect and low cost, but all have their limitations in terms of maximum differential pressure, temperature, chemical [1]. The paper designed a metal seal used in coiled tubing wellhead hanging device, and predicted the sealing performance, that to replace the existing seal design.…”
