Recent Materials Developed for Dispersive Solid Phase Extraction

Abstract: Solid phase extraction (SPE) is an analytical procedure developed with the purpose of separating a target analyte from a complex sample matrix prior to quantitative or qualitative determination. The purpose of such treatment is twofold: elimination of matrix constituents that could interfere with the detection process or even damage analytical equipment as well as enriching the analyte in the sample so that it is readily available for detection. Dispersive solid phase extraction (dSPE) is a recent development … Show more

“…The resulting process is quick, efficient, and cost-effective, and because it uses so little sorbent and solvent, it can be considered more environmentally friendly than traditional SPE. 27 Nonetheless, there are few investigations on nanoMIPs-based dispersive SPE techniques in the literature. In a study, nano-MIPs and metal-organic frameworks were used in dispersive SPE to extract residual tetracycline drugs from the chicken muscle sample.…”

“…At present, a large selection of sorbents are available on the market, both as bulk material and in the form of packed cartridges, discs, pipette tips and 96-wellplates, enabling the use of SPE for a wide range of applications [25,26]. In this regard, polymer-based sorbents still count as one of the most important SPE materials with progressive research being conducted over the last decades [27][28][29][30].…”

“…Nevertheless, new classes of sorption materials are investigated to improve selectivity toward target analytes, increase sorption capacity, enhance mechanical durability, and make the entire process more environmentally-friendly. Among such new materials are silica-based sorbents, magnetic nanoparticles, and carbon-derived materials, such as graphene or fullerene-related carbon nanotubes, metal-organic frameworks, porous polymers, and biopolymers [ 6 , 7 ]. Silica-based materials are easy to synthesize, providing a rigid material with satisfactory resistance to shrinking and swelling but suffer from limited capability for modification and moderate tolerance to extreme pH values.…”
