“…As immune impairment worsens, so too may the clinical expression of KS. 79 A few studies suggest that patients with KS as their first AIDS-defining illness may actually have a longer survival than patients without KS. 80,81 Early in the AIDS epidemic, the median CD4ϩ T-lymphocyte count was higher at diagnosis of KS than at diagnosis of other AIDS-defining opportunistic infections.…”

“…KS lesions are characterized by the presence of a gamma-herpes virus, HHV-8, and a complex network of cytokines, angiogenic and growth factors, extracellular matrix components, and integrins. 2,3 Several angiogenic factors have been implicated in the pathogenesis of KS, including factors released by the KS spindle cells, by inflammatory cells, by HHV-8-infected cells and, in the case of AIDSassociated KS (AIDS-KS), by HIV-infected cells. [2][3][4] Among the latter, Tat, the transactivating gene product of the human immunodeficency virus type 1 (HIV-1), is thought to play a role in the initiation and aggressiveness of AIDS-KS.…”

“…Pulmonary KS affects 18±47 % of patients with known cutaneous KS [58,59], and affects the lung parenchyma, pleura or tracheo-bronchial tree. A virus from the herpes family has been identified as the causal agent for Kaposi's sarcoma and is referred to as Kaposi's-sarcoma-associated herpes virus (KSHV) or human herpes virus 8 [60,61,62]. Almost all cases of KS have been documented in either homosexual or bisexual men and their partners.…”
