Recent insights into green antimicrobial packaging towards food safety reinforcement: A review

Abstract: Food packaging is widely used method of food preservation around the world. It is an element that enhances the quality and food product safety. The primary function of packaging is to protect food from contamination, undesirable chemical reactions and to provide physical protection. Food spoilage caused by food‐borne pathogens and microbes is increasing tremendously posing an enormous threat. In the field of food packaging, new biodegradable and natural antimicrobial agents from plants and animals are gaining … Show more

“…They possess their characteristics with different bacterial classes (aerobic and anaerobic) and actual application in food packaging. O 2 creates a favourable environment for aerobic microbial growth [22,59]. Hence, in food products, the depleting concentration of O 2 can often be visualized with an increased microbial activity following a typical distribution pattern.…”

“…These films release antimicrobial agents over time, inhibiting the growth of bacteria and pathogens that could compromise product safety. This technology not only extends shelf life but also enhances product safety and quality [39] . Beyond preserving product freshness, intelligent packaging technologies are enhancing transparency and trust among consumers.…”

“…The last factor includes the cost; therefore, the edible films have a price 10–50 times higher than the petroleum-derived plastic films. In order to attract consumers, the cost should be lower or equal to the petroleum derived [ 134 , 135 ].…”
