The heavy rainfalls occurring in Italy in the last few years focused the attention on the vulnerability of the land and the related infrastructures. Critical situations involving losses of human life and deterioration or failure of relevant structures are frequent. These events were due to: (1) improper land-use; (2) aging of infrastructures, (3) insufficient maintenance and protection; (4) climate changes causing rainstorms similar to tropical events. The failure of small bridges in road networks plays a key role in this sense. The present paper aims to analyse the behaviour of small bridges during rainfalls or floods. In particular, the recent case of Livorno is analysed. The Italian territory has about 460.000 small bridges, mostly designed without the support of technical codes or a proper interaction between the hydraulic and structural aspects. A large part of them can be submerged by water flows during rainfalls and pushed by unexpected actions. The failure scenarios allow identifying the hydraulic and structural vulnerabilities through a specific survey. A classification of small bridges on the basis of submergibility indexes is eventually proposed. KEYWORDS. Small bridges; Structural and hydraulic assessment; Road network safety; Livorno flood. Lessons Learnt from Bridge Collapse: A View of Sustainable Management

Bridge failure is one of the worst infrastructural disasters. This paper investigates the risk of bridge infrastructures in the view of sustainable management. Statistics on bridge failures from 2009 to 2019 in China show that most of these failures are related to anthropic factors. The collapse of the Zijin Bridge on 14 June 2019 in Heyuan City of Guangdong Province, China is used as a case to perform detailed analysis. Superficially, bridge collapse is a technical problem rather than a management problem. However, the deep reason for this kind of bridge failure may be due to the lack of sustainable management. In order to verify this point of view, both fault tree analysis (FTA) and strategic environmental assessment (SEA) for the bridge failure and later impact on society are conducted. According to the FTA results, the failure of the arch foot is the direct trigger of the Zijin Bridge collapse. Since a lack of real-time monitoring, risk assessment and other management issues are potential factors causing bridge collapse, strategic environmental assessment (SEA) is used to investigate the management issues related to the economy, culture, human health and environmental sustainability in more depth. The low total SEA result shows poor project management and a high safety risk. Finally, the specific managerial measures are proposed to improve the sustainability of infrastructures.

Progressive collapse is a persistent spread and enlargement of initial local failure of structures characterized by inconsistency between the initial failure and its resulting extensive collapse. Although, great contributions have been made towards the progressive collapse of building structures, comparably small attention has been paid to bridge structures. In this study, the procedure of progressive collapse of bridges with concrete prestressed voided slab under earthquakes and effects of other parameters on propagation of collapse of regular, semiregular, and irregular bridges are investigated. At first, a bridge specimen, which its shake table test results were provided by previous researchers, was modeled and verified using the applied element method. en, the progressive collapse of the box girder bridge was investigated. In the next step, progressive collapse process of the same bridge with posttensioned voided slab under earthquakes was studied using nonlinear time history analysis. Irregularities of the piers were analyzed parametrically. e results show that domino-type progressive collapse happens in bridges with voided slab after the initial failure of the deck at the seating of bridge abutment. Also, it is concluded that, type of the deck, height of the piers, and ground slope have a great effect on the progressive collapse procedure of both regular and irregular bridges with voided slab deck.
