Recent divergences and size decreases of eastern gorilla populations

Abstract: Compared with other African apes, eastern gorillas (Gorilla beringei) have been little studied genetically. We used analysis of autosomal DNA genotypes obtained from non-invasively collected faecal samples to estimate the evolutionary histories of the two extant mountain gorilla populations and the closely related eastern lowland gorillas. Our results suggest that eastern lowland gorillas and mountain gorillas split beginning some 10 000 years ago, followed 5000 years ago by the split of the two mountain goril… Show more

“…Analyses based on nuclear DNA markers suggest that gene flow continued to take place over much of the Pleistocene and that the two eastern gorilla taxa are likely to have diverged within the past 10 ka, whereas the split between the two Mountain Gorilla populations started around 5 ka (Roy et al . ). The distributional ranges of gorillas and of B. graueri do not overlap completely.…”

“…In gorilla populations, there is clear indication of substantial and recent gene flow between distant populations (Jensen‐Seaman & Kidd , Ackermann & Bishop , Roy et al . , Xue et al . ).…”

“…The subspecies of Cross River gorillas diverged from western lowland gorillas roughly 17,800 year ago, with gene flow as recently as ~420 years ago . The subspecies of Grauer's gorillas and mountain gorillas separated approximately 10,000 years ago, and the two populations of mountain gorillas (Virungas and Bwindi) split about 5,000 years ago …”

“…Monophyly of PyV infecting Western chimpanzees in lineage 1 and Eastern chimpanzees in lineage 2 as well as inclusion of MCPyV in lineage 2 could not be excluded (AU test; P ϭ 0.52, 0.13, and 0.11, respectively). Given the very recent split of Eastern lowland and mountain gorillas (about 10,000 years ago [44]), the interspersion of PyV infecting these subspecies appeared biologically plausible, so we did not compare this scenario to a strict codivergence model.…”
