Recent Developments on Catalytic Applications of Nano-Crystalline Magnesium Oxide

Abstract: Nanocrystalline metal oxides, MgO, CuO, ZnO, TiO 2 as catalysts or catalyst supports have been received much attention in the recent years, especially nanocrystalline magnesium oxide (NAP-MgO) has been used as a recyclable catalyst for Wittig, WadsworthEmmons, aza-Michael, Baylis-Hillman, Strecker, Aldol, Claisen-Schmidt condensation and other useful organic reactions. In general, it is reported that nanocrystalline magnesium oxide shows better activity in many organic reactions. These high reactivities are du… Show more

“…Magnesium oxide is considered to be environmentally friendly, nontoxic, and economical. It can also be used as a heterogeneous catalyst and as an effective destructive chemical adsorbent in the treatment of toxic gases and wastewater (Chintareddy & Kantam, 2011; Mohammadi, Bazrafshan, Noroozifar, & Ansari‐Moghaddam, 2016). Magnesium oxide is also used in antacids, antidote, biomolecular testing, and diagnosis (Kaur et al, 2018).…”

“…Magnesium oxide (MgO) and magnesium hydroxide (Mg(OH) 2 ) are two of the most environmentally friendly materials when compared to other materials [3][4][5]. For properties such as flame resistance, dielectric resistance, and mechanical strength; and micro structural properties such as porosity, large surface area catalysis, acid-base sites, and gas adsorption, MgO is well received in industrial applications such as ceramics, cement, and water treatments [2,[5][6][7][8][9][10][11]. At intermediate temperatures, CO 2 absorbents based on MgO have been identified as promising.…”

“…Despite many uses, MgO is considered as one of the promising materials as a solid base catalyst and support owing to their wide surface area and tunable surface basicity . In the field of heterogeneous catalysis, MgO holds a remarkable position as it exhibits strong surface basicity that consequently associates with the diverse base‐catalyzed organic transformations . Numerous salient synthesis reactions, such as Meerwein–Ponndorf–Verley reduction, alkylation, aldolization, esterification and condensations can be performed using MgO based heterogeneous solid base catalysts .…”
