Recent developments in the field of barrier and permeability properties of segmented polyurethane elastomers

Abstract: Abstract Polyurethane (PU) elastomers represent an important class of segmented copolymers. Thanks to many available chemical compositions, a rather broad range of chemical, physical, and biocompatible properties of PU can be obtained. These polymers are often characterized by high tensile and tear strength, elongation, fatigue life, and wear resistance. However, their relatively high permeability towards gases and water as well as their biocompatibility still limits the PU’s p… Show more

“…Due to their physicochemical properties, such as lightness, flexibility, and chemical resistance, polymer materials have numerous technological applications in different industrial and biomedical fields related to protective and functional coatings, non‐fouling biosurfaces, medical implants, separators, advanced membranes, and so on 1‐3 . However, because of certain industrial specifications, including mechanical, thermal, optical or barrier properties, some modifications (chemical and/or physical) of the polymer materials can be required.…”

“…The poor elasticity of the two segmented PUs was caused by their low molecular weight which, in turn, influences the morphology of the segmented PUs [27]. Hetflejš et al [28] illustrated that the stabilizing efficiency of polymer-linked structures could be compared with that of their low-molecular-weight analogs, physically admixed with the PU.…”

“…As summarized in Table S1, increased decomposition temperature (T onset ) was found in FSPU-5 and FSPU-10 but started to decrease from FSPU-15. This change might due to weakened inter-chain interactions [28]. To investigate how the star-shaped cross-linker affects the polymer performance, we fixed the feeding ratio of the PPG to HDI with 1:2 for the purpose to get the prepolymer with ending isocyanate groups.…”
