Recent Developments in Solid-Phase Extraction for Near and Attenuated Total Reflection Infrared Spectroscopic Analysis

Abstract: A review with more than 100 references on the principles and recent developments in the solid-phase extraction (SPE) prior and for in situ near and attenuated total reflection (ATR) infrared spectroscopic analysis is presented. New materials, chromatographic modalities, experimental setups and configurations are described. Their advantages for fast sample preparation for distinct classes of compounds containing different functional groups in order to enhance selectivity and sensitivity are discussed and compar… Show more

“…15 Another, more conclusive hypothesis is, however, that the amount of water sorption is related to the PMMA's porosity. 17,18 Since monitoring the process of water absorption and desorption might derive new strategies for maximizing the denture base resin stability, it has been the aim of this study to investigate the water absorption/desorption and homogeneity using near-infrared (NIR) 19 and mid-infrared (MIR) spectroscopy, attenuated total reflection (ATR) 20,21 and imaging 22 spectroscopy, respectively. Infrared (IR) spectroscopy provides a noninvasive, yet fast analysis of given properties.…”

“…[41][42][43] In ATR-IR spectroscopy, the polymeric sample is pressed onto an internal reflection element (IRE) so that the evanescent field penetrates at least a few micrometers into the polymer of interest showing high signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio. 20 Infrared imaging spectroscopy takes advantage of the principle of a hyperspectral cube containing a threedimensional (3D) spectral and spatial data set with a spatial resolution down to approximately 2 mm in combination with ATR (ATR imaging). 44 Additionally, this technique does not require the application onto the sample for measurement.…”

“…What is equally important, NIR spectroscopy – and in wider context, vibrational spectroscopy – still requires to be used in hyphenation with other tools of analytical chemistry. 22 The powerful methods such as chromatography (gas, liquid, also coupled to the ultra-sensitive detectors), mass spectrometry and their combined usage provide the reference analyses without which spectroscopic methods would not be successful. However, the mentioned methods often remain prohibitively expensive and unfeasible for many of potential uses.…”

“…The extraction materials frequently used in SPE columns are the chemically bonded silica and the porous polystyrene . However, both of these two types of materials have distinct shortcomings, for instance, alkaline instability of silica, demand for an activating solvent, and incompletely extraction for some compounds . Therefore, it is essential to explore a novel extraction substrate.…”
