Recent Developments in HPLC Analysis of β-Blockers in Biological Samples

Abstract: β-Adrenergic blockers represent a very important class of drugs that are used worldwide for treating various cardiac diseases. The present article describes the state-of-the art of analyses of β-adrenergic blockers using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). Sample preparation techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction and solid-phase microextraction have been discussed, which are essential prior to HPLC analysis. Additionally, applications of liquid chromatography coupled wit… Show more

“…These methods include: spectrophotometry [5][6][7][8] , NMR spectroscopy 9 , fluorimetry 10 , potentiometry 11 , GC [12][13] , HPLC [14][15][16][17][18] and capillary electrophoresis [19][20][21] . Despite the precision and accuracy of chromatographic and capillary electrophoresis methods, these are time-consuming and expensive due to high analytical cost, limiting the operation of these instruments to highly qualified laboratory persons.…”

“…In solid phase extraction, the selected beta-blockers are distributed between a solid phase and a liquid phase, having a greater affinity for the solid phase [34]. It involves the use of extraction cartridges and is a fast and selective technique used for processing biological samples.…”

“…Liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase micro-extraction and solid-phase extraction are commonly used for the preparation of biological samples. Most of these methods require various steps for the extraction of metoprolol from blood samples [11,12]. Aim of present study was to develop a sensitive, precise, accurate and simple HPLC-UV method for metoprolol determination in plasma and investigate its application for pharmacokinetic study in rabbits.…”
