Recent developments in community leg ulcer management

Abstract

Leg ulceration is a common chronic condition which can have a significant impact on the patient’s quality of life. This article discusses recent developments and nurse-led initiatives in the assessment, treatment and aftercare for patients with leg ulceration. The importance of establishing community-based leg ulcer services and adopting a multidisciplinary team approach to leg ulcer management is examined. The article also discusses the role of the tissue viability specialist in relation to effective care provision, education and quality of life issues in patients with leg ulceration.
