Recent developments in calix[4]pyrrole (C4P)-based supramolecular functional systems

Abstract: Recent advances with calix[4]pyrrole-based supramolecular functional entities in the fields of molecular recognition (receptors, sensors, and metal ion caged systems), self-assembly (polymers), photo/pH-responsive molecular switches and catalysis are reviewed.

“…A list of various functionalized C4Ps based systems used as ion-pairs receptors is displayed in the Figure 3. [18,[30][31][32] Aydogan and his co-workers have designed and constructed an ion-pair receptor 13 based on carboxylate-functionalized C4P having cetyltrimethylammonium (CTA) as countercation (Figure 4). [33] Interestingly, this system showed reversible and rapid sol-gel transition.…”

“…In this section, we will shade light on the sensing and recognition behaviour of calix[4]pyrroles (C4Ps), calixarenes, crown ether, urea, and square amide based systems in detail. A list of various functionalized C4Ps based systems used as ion‐pairs receptors is displayed in the Figure 3 [18,30–32] …”

“…As an emerging and evolving science, supramolecular chemistry has demonstrated energetic vitality and strong cross-integration capabilities and is deeply connected to chemistry, physics, biology, materials science and many other fields, forming a range of subdisciplines. [6][7][8][9][10] Supramolecular chemistry is based on supramolecules, which are complex and organized aggregates of two or more molecules held together by non-covalent intermolecular interactions. [11][12][13][14] Non-covalent interactions endow supramolecules with excellent properties, such as external stimulus response, self-healing, and degradability.…”

“… [47–49] . Notably, the tetrapyrrolic macrocyclic supramolecular receptors, namely calix[4]pyrroles are yet to be explored for boronic acid chemistry from fundamental to advanced level [50–53] . From the literature perspective, various aryl substituents have been installed selectively at one of the available meso ‐positions (Figure 1) in order to evaluate their effect on the binding/sensing of anions/metal cations [40,54–63] .…”
