“…The reason why such species do not venture into mesohaline waters closer to their isosmotic state remains difficult to explain. The sensitivity of some freshwater fish species to even very low salinities, however, is indicated by the extinction of four taxa from Lake Bafa (Turkey) as a result of salinization occurring in this predominantly freshwater system during the 1990s (Sari et al, 1999).…”

“…On the other hand, the contribution of Bafa lake to EMA‐2 was a remarkable of 15 tonnes in 1956 (Artüz, 1958) up to 73 tonnes in the 1980s (Kasparek, 1988). The increase of the European eel population is explained by the low number of fishers and the extinction of its predator, Siluris glanis in Bafa lake (Sarı et al., 1999). The recorded European eel catch data is still as high as 41 tonnes in 2018 in Bafa lake (Tosunoğlu & Ünal, 2019).…”

“…Moreover, residuals from agricultural fertilizers and pesticides upstream in the Soke Plains are threatening the fish and bird populations (Koc 2008). Subsequently, stenohalin species such as Cyprinus carpio (Common Carp) has disappeared from the lake (Sari and Bilecenoglu 2002;Sari et al 1999) and Acanthobrama mirabilis ladiges (Ulubat Fish), an endemic of the northern Mediterranean, almost came to the point of extinction (Sari et al 1999). Recently, the General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (GDSHW) has initiated a project titled "Protecting the Natural Life and Ecological Balance of Lake Bafa".…”
