Recent changes in sedimentation regime in Cienfuegos Bay, Cuba, as inferred from 210Pb and 137Cs vertical profiles

Abstract: The aim of this work was to analyze hydrological condition variations in Cienfuegos' Bay in 2011 and its possible influence in life cycle and distribution of the green mussel Perna viridis. The hydrological parameters in the bay are described according to the campaigns performed in February, May and November. Samples from two levels (surface and bottom) were taken, in order to get water temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen. The results show the climatic seasonality influence (dry and rain) both in spatia… Show more

“…Studies in Cienfuegos Bay have been carried out about hydrology (Seisdedo and Muñ oz, 2004;Seisdedo, 2006), sediments (Alonso-Hernandez et al, 2006), circulation (Muñ oz et al, 2008), and benthic communities Pé rez-García et al, 2009). They suggest a relatively complex coastal system with high spatial and temporal variance in natural processes and clearly influenced by human activities.…”

“…The 210 Pb radioisotope is a member of the 238 U-decay series and may be produced from the decay of 222 Rn in the atmosphere referred to as unsupported/excess 210 Pb or 210 Pb exc Alonso-Hernandez et al, 2006;. The in situ radioactive decay of 226 Ra in the water column also produces 210 Pb referred to as supported 210 Pb or 210 Pb supp (Oldfield and Appleby, 1984;Appleby, 2008;Nehyba et al, 2011;Abril and Brunskill, 2014 Ra and other members of the decay chain preceding it, while the 210 Pb exc represents that part of the measured total 210 Pb specific activity in sediment that exceeds the specific activity in secular equilibrium with 226 Ra (Pfitzner et al, 2004;Hollins et al, 2011).…”

“…In depositional environments, where continuous accumulation of sediments has taken place over a long period of time without any interruption in the sedimentary sequence or mixing, the 210 Pb sediment dating technique has proven useful for quantifying SARs on time scales spanning 100-150 years (Appleby and Oldfield, 1978;Caroll and Lerche, 2003;Alonso-Hernandez et al, 2006;Díaz-Asencio et al, 2011;. Sedimentation in coastal marine harbours is, however, a dynamic process for which relatively large spatial and temporal variations can be expected .…”
