The ''Bathymodiolus'' childressi group is the most geographically diverse assemblage of deep-sea mussel species. In this paper we consider several possible hypotheses to explain the present biogeographic distribution of the ''B.'' childressi species complex. Mussels were collected for the first time from mud volcanoes in the Gulf of Cadiz (NE Atlantic Ocean) during the training through research (TTR) 16 research expedition in 2006. Preliminary observations of the shell features indicate that they belong to the ''B.'' childressi species complex, which has been recognized as morphologically and genetically distinct from other Bathymodiolus species. Molecular analyses of two mitochondrial genes (COI-5 and ND4) were used to characterize the new mussel population from the Gulf of Cadiz (GOC) and to determine their phylogenetic relationships with other members of the ''B.'' childressi group. The results indicate that the GOC mussels are conspecific with ''Bathymodiolus'' mauritanicus Cosel (2002), described from West Africa margin, and support a previous hypothesis that ''B.'' mauritanicus is an amphi-Atlantic species

Large vesicomyid clams (Veneroida: Vesicomyidae: Pliocardiinae) are prominent members of the communities associated with sulphide-rich deep-sea habitats. Taxonomic uncertainties within the Pliocardiinae result from both plasticity in shell morphologies and the common occurrence of cryptic species. Molecular taxonomic studies have now clarified many species-level assignments and provided DNA-barcodes for more than 50 species worldwide. Nonetheless, genus-level assignments remain uncertain, because the existing COI barcode sequences are not sufficient for identifying higher-level groupings. To construct a robust phylogeny for this subfamily, we conducted a combined Bayesian analysis of the COI mitochondrial fragment and five additional independent nuclear gene segments. The phylogenetic results provide a better foundation for assessing genus-level assignments within the subfamily and reveal goals for future taxonomic research. Furthermore, morphological examinations helped to clarify and solidify generic classifications. Calibration of molecular clocks with recently verified fossil data permitted realistic estimates for the origins and evolutionary age of pliocardiins during the Cenozoic Era from a deep-dwelling ancestor.http://zoobank.org/urn:lsid:zoobank

‘Pliocardia' krylovata, sp. nov. (Bivalvia: Vesicomyidae: Pliocardiinae) is described from cold seeps off the coast of the Nicoya Peninsula, Costa Rica (700–1000 m depth). The phylogenetic position of‘P.' krylovatawas assessed by both morphological comparisons as well as nucleotide data from the cytochrome c oxidase I gene. Within the vesicomyids,‘P.' krylovatabelongs to the Pliocardiinae and its closest relative is‘Calyptogena' ponderosa, which also bears some morphological resemblance to the genusPliocardia, perhaps suggesting a need for reanalysis of not only its generic designation, but also the entire Pliocardiinae subfamily.‘P.' krylovatahas morphological similarities to‘Pliocardia' bowdenianaand‘Vesicomya' crenulomarginata, recently reassigned to the genusPliocardia, including a thick shell, obvious rostrum, pointed posterior end, and a sculptured shell with concentric ribs on the outer surface, to name a few. It is morphologically distinguished, however, by having a complex pallial sinus and remarkably deep escutcheon.
