Recent behaviour of the Debeli Namet glacier, Durmitor, Montenegro

Abstract: A small cirque glacier is present in a north-east facing cirque on the mountain of 5ljeme (2455 m a.s.l.) in the Durmitor massif, Montenegro. Sediment ridges in front of this glacier are interpreted as moraines and can be attributed to recent glacier activity over the past 130 years. Lichenometry was applied to determine the relative ages of different moraines using Aspicilia calcarea agg. One set of moraines dates from about 1878 AD, whilst another set of inner moraines dates from about 1904 AD. The most rece… Show more

“…Recent U-series dates from secondary calcites within moraines from sites across Montenegro indicate that the largest glaciations occurred during the Middle Pleistocene cold stages (Hughes and Woodward, unpublished data). At the head of the Karlica valley in the Durmitor massif, there is a modern glacier with a suite of large frontal moraines dated using lichenometry to the late 19th and early 20th centuries (Hughes, 2007). Around 1 km down-valley of this small glacier, just above the Struga pass between the peaks of Meped (2287 m a.s.l.)…”

“…Secondary calcites within these moraines have been dated using U-series and provide a minimum age for the host moraines. A modern glacier -the Debeli Namet -is present at the head of the valley (Hughes, 2007). These U-series dates are important because they demonstrate that the valley moraines are likely to be Late Pleistocene in age -possibly correlating with the Younger Dryas.…”

“…The present of a fine matrix in the morainic material and the clear difference between the less blocky depressions and the blocky outer boundaries of the sites also exclude possible existence of a rock glacier. Present analogues of AFGs are found elsewhere in marginal glacial environments (e.g., Hughes, 2007;Carturan et al, 2013a). For example, the lowermost glacier in Italy is fed by avalanches from high rock walls, which also reduce ablation of the glacier by topographic shading and supplying debris.…”
